110 Percenters: Showdown Shakedown

Season 1, Episode 7

This week, Cody, Jonathan and I dissect Port Adelaide’s excellent win in Showdown 60 and discuss what it says about novice coach Josh Carr, Zak Butters, and the persistent flaws of the side they defeated, Adelaide.

We also had a long conversation about the harrowing Four Corners documentary about Nick Lowden, the former Casey Demons and Norwood player who was diagnosed with CTE after passing away at 23. The documentary, and other excellent reporting by the ABC’s investigations team, raises many troubling, complex questions about the future of our game, the duties of the AFL, and even our responsibilities as people who love the game.

We were determined to end the show on a lighter note, so we also shot From The Hip, delivering our takes on the future of commentary, the rules we’d politely discuss with Swanny (ripper bloke), and footy’s equivalent of Ben Stokes.

I’ve put links to Cody and Jonathan’s writing after the jump. Their work is the best in the business.

You’ll also find links to the full ABC Four Corners investigation, a game of Calcio Storico, and a piece about how former US President Teddy Roosevelt saved (American) football.
